Macau may welcome 40 million visitors in 2025

acau may receive up to 40 million visitors in 2025, according to the Macau Tourism Industry General Development Plan, which covers activities to be developed over the next 15 years and was published on Thursday by the Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO).

The document presented by the director of the MGTO, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, is intended to ensure the development of the tourism industry in line with the country’s direction of development and with the government of the Macau Special Administrative Region.

Senna Fernandes noted that following the national “Belt and Road” initiative and the MSAR government’s vision of Macau’s transformation into a World Tourism and Leisure Centre, new opportunities for Macau’s tourism industry have opened up.

She said that the Macau Tourism Industry General Development Plan, which took two years to prepare, presents eight key objectives, 33 strategies, 91 short-, medium- and long-term measures, which constitute an action plan and a scheme that covers different levels of development of the tourism industry.

The plan includes two possible scenarios for 2025, based on past indicators, such as the number of visitors entering Macau in 2016, which totalled 30.95 million.

A more conservative scenario indicates that by 2025 Macau will receive between 33 and 35 million visitors, based on annual growth of 1% to 2%, and the more optimistic secenario is based on a growth forecast of between 3% and 5%, which would increase visitors to between 38 million and 40 million.
